In this session we will present the challenges that our organization, Forward Community Investments, faced when we diversified our Board of Directors. The journey has not been easy. There have been considerable consequences and benefits because of this decision.

Detailed Description

The planned workshop would be a panel discussion with our executive leadership and members from our Board of Directors. Their experiences both before, during, and after the Board shakeup would be valuable to any audience. The overall theme will be that diversifying a board is hard, but that makes sense because diversity is hard. The bottom line is that if we want to see equitable neighborhoods and communities in Madison, then the composition of Boards need to look like those communities. Organizations have to live equity not just speak equity. That distinction is everything,

Takeaways

A big takeaway will be how to recruit diverse members to their organization. We also hope that a big takeaway will be the inherent value that having a diverse board brings to an organization.
