Ameera Khan began studying at St Louis University in August 2014, and always had a sense of passion and purpose around doing Interfaith work and being proud of and sharing her identity as a Muslim and the messages of peace and intellect behind Islamic teachings. Beyond that, she stayed far away from politics and took a centrist position on most issues. While attending St. Louis University, the protests in Ferguson around the shooting of Michael Brown occurred and spilled over onto her campus, and she learned about how social justice movements that may be inherently political are actually essential to her duty as an American Citizen and to the tenants of her Muslim faith. During this time she also realized her queer and transgender identity, and felt what it was like to be rejected from a tight-knit group of friends who all considered themselves Muslim. She felt isolated, and this eventually culminated in a performance of spoken word poetry where she came out of the closet in front of an all-Muslim audience of several hundred people at an MSA conference in Knoxville, Tennessee.

After this, she was connected to a group of queer-inclusive and queer-identifying Muslims on Facebook, and with that community she built a solid foundation of understanding her religious traditions in a queer-inclusive context. Since then her theology has evolved to center the liberation and support of marginalized people, and she has brought this understanding to the Muslim-specific and Interfaith events she has attended and hosted at St. Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as non-academic contexts such as with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and on Capitol Hill with Advocates for Youth and the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice.

She graduated from St. Louis University in May 2018 with a Bachelor's of Science in Bioelectrical Engineering, with minors in Math and Computer Science, after which she worked for Epic Hosting for 10 months as a Client Systems Engineer. Even though she is no longer a full-time student or working in the nonprofit or activism world, she tries to continue to integrate this work in her capacity as a youth activist on the board of the Muslim Youth Leadership Council with Advocates for Youth.

She has contributed to creating resources (such as PDF guides and social media visibility campaigns) and networks for LGBTQ+ Muslim youth and their allies.
